Disability insurance is something that most people don’t like to think about getting.

It's unpleasant to have to think about a situation where it might be needed.

The problem is, if you're disabled, you still need to pay the bills.

It's important to think about the worst case scenario, and plan ahead for your family's sake, to figure out how your household will get by in case you can't work. In my opinion, long term disability insurance is essential.

Shopping for disability insurance can be a pain. I've done it in the past, and with some insurers there are mountains of paperwork, health screenings and more. It can take weeks to get insured.

Breeze has turned all that on its head. They offer a totally online 15-minute disability insurance quote and application process.

Let's take a look at what Breeze has to offer in the review below.

"It's A Breeze" To Get Disability Insurance With Breeze

About Breeze Insurance

Breeze is an online disability insurance company. Their name "Breeze" comes from the phrase "It's a breeze", and refers to their quick and easy application process.

Founded in 2019, they are underwritten by Assurity Life Insurance, a company that has been around since 1890. Assurity is rated as "Excellent" by AM Best, the leading insurance company ratings provider. You can be assured that they're a legit company and you can feel safe using them.

Why Is Disability Insurance Important?

A question that I often hear on this site is, "Do I really need disability insurance"?

The answer for most people (who aren't independently wealthy) is, yes, you probably should get it. The numbers bear that out.

  • 25% of Americans will experience a disability in their careers before retirement. (U.S. Social Security Administration Fact Sheet, 2018).
  • 90% of long term disabilities result from illnesses rather than accidents (Council for Disability Awareness, 2018).
  • 70% of working Americans would not be able to make it a month without a paycheck before experiencing financial hardship. (Life Happens Survey, 2018).

The likelihood of having a disabling event, along with the relative affordability of disability insurance makes it an easy sale to me.

Now if you want to gamble and hope that you're one of the lucky ones that won't experience a disability, there is a decent chance that you won't. But you never know for sure, and long term disability insurance is there to help you mitigate that risk, for a reasonable cost.

What Does Disability Insurance Cover?

While the details will vary from plan to plan, disability insurance helps to replace a portion of your income if you experience an accident, injury or illness that keeps you from working.

When you have a disabling event, the insurance will begin to pay out a certain amount every month, after your elimination period (the waiting period after which you start receiving payments).

The more you want the policy to pay out, the more you'll have to pay in premiums. Some occupations that have higher risk or that involve manual labor will also cost more, sometimes significantly more.

Other factors that can cause your rates to increase or decrease include:

  • The benefit amount you receive.
  • The benefit period, or how long you are paid for.
  • The waiting period or elimination period, or how long until you receive your first payment after a disabling event.
  • Gender (women typically pay more)
  • Age (younger people pay less)
  • Health (Health issues could affect rates)
  • Lifestyle (Smoking can increase rates)
  • Location (some states may have higher rates)
  • Policy riders

When you're looking for a disability insurance policy, you should consider these all of these things and their potential to affect your rates.

What Does Breeze Offer?

Breeze offers long term disability insurance in an easy, online, 15-minute process.

First, get a personalized quote with multiple different coverage options. You can choose the best option for you and then submit an application. Breeze uses technology to make fast underwriting decisions, so you will know whether or not you have been approved for coverage soon after

Breeze the easiest way to get long term disability insurance

If your policy’s monthly benefit amount is $4,000 or less, you will not need to take a medical exam in most cases. However, policies with benefit amounts higher than $4,000 may require a medical exam.

Some of the occupations they offer disability insurance for include:

  • Doctors
  • Nurses
  • Architects
  • Attorneys
  • Consultants
  • Entrepreneurs
  • Self-employed
  • Accountants
  • Software engineers
  • Startup employees
  • Teachers

Breeze is one of the only companies to offer a completely online disability insurance product like this. Most require it to be done in person, over the phone or require manual underwriting or exams regardless of the benefit amount.

Policies with Breeze will start at around $9/month, and go up from there depending on exact coverages. Getting a quote is easy and requires no hard credit pull, so the best thing to do is just go through the process and get a quote for your individual situation.

Features Of A Breeze Insurance Policy

Every Breeze policy comes with some free features and benefits:

  • Partial disability
  • Presumptive disability
  • Home modification
  • Survivor benefit
  • Vocational rehab
  • Organ donor benefit

Additional Policy Riders

If you want to upgrade your policy you can also add on additional riders for your policy including:

  • Noncancellable: As long as you stay up to date on your premiums, Breeze can't cancel or increase your monthly payments.
  • Own-occupation: You'll be covered if you're considered disabled but can still work in other occupations.
  • Automatic benefit increase: Increase the monthly payout after the first year benefits have been paid out.
  • Catastrophic disability benefit: Get extra income to pay for things health insurance doesn't cover.
  • Critical illness benefit: Coverage if you're diagnosed with a critical illness like cancer.
  • Guaranteed insurability: You can buy additional insurance without additional underwriting.
  • Supplemental DI rider: You can still receive benefits from Breeze even if you get Social Security disability benefits.

For full details about each of these riders, check out the Breeze site.
