I was talking with the good folks over at Perkstreet Financial this week about a contest that they are launching in conjunction with another one of my favorite financial companies, Lending Club. They’re putting live a brand new site today where they’ll be hosting said contest from December 15th until January 31st. They’re promoting the idea of how both companies can help you to become debt free, and enable you to ditch your credit cards once and for all.
So what’s the new site called, and what’s the contest?
The site is called ShredYourCreditCard.com, and the contest is to come up with the most creative way to shred your credit card, and to do it on video. Once you film yourself shredding the credit card, just submit your video through their site, and if your video gets the most votes from other users, you could win a cash prize. Two people will also get chosen as the most creative by Perkstreet and Lending Club. They’re giving away over $2000 for this contest, and there will be at least one $25 guaranteed winner from Bible Money Matters reader submitted videos, so you have a pretty decent chance of winning!
Shred Your Credit Card – Contest Details

So here are some of the details about the contest, of which Bible Money Matters has agreed to be a part. From ShredYourCreditCard.com:
What do you get when PerkStreet Financial and Lending Club get together? A simple solution to ditching your credit cards once and for all.
Millions of Americans will set out to dump their reliance on credit cards in the new year, and millions will fail. So PerkStreet and Lending Club are creating a microsite (ShredYourCreditCard.com) to help them band together over what will certainly be some compelling videos of credit card’s being destroyed.
Entries and votes will be accepted from December 15, 2010 through January 29, 2011, and PerkStreet and Lending Club are giving away a GRAND PRIZE of $1,000 to the most popular video submitted on January 31, 2011 — which we’re declaring Shred Your Credit Card Day.
The most creative shreds will also receive cash prizes amounting to $900, and top vote-getter per week will also be awarded a $50 gift card throughout the submission and voting period (6 Weeks).
How To Participate
To participate (and hopefully win!), just do the following things:
- Cancel a credit card. (Make sure you disguise your credit card number in your video, just to be safe.)
- Film yourself talking about why you’re done dabbling with debt this year, or record the most creative way you can think of to destroy your card.
- Submit your video to ShredYourCreditCard.com. Be sure to choose Bible Money Matters as the site that referred you to win our special prize.
- Vote for yourself EVERY DAY and encourage others to do the same on Facebook and Twitter, or via email.
- Check ShredYourCreditCard.com every Wednesday through the end of January to see if you’ve won a weekly prize.
- Visit ShredYourCreditCard.com on Shred Your Credit Card Day (Jan. 31) to see if you’ve won the GRAND PRIZE ($1,000) or any of the Second Place prizes ($300 each).
Contest Prizes
Here are the prizes you could potentially win:
- 1 $1000 grand prize on 1/31/2011 for the video that gets the most votes overall.
- 2 $300 second prizes on 1/31/2011 for the most creative overall submissions. (selected by Lending Club and Perkstreet)
- $50 prize every week until 1/31/2011 for the top vote-getter of the week.
- 1 $25 prize on 1/31/2011 for my favorite Bible Money Matters reader submission.
How To Win
It’s pretty simple, there are only two ways to win this contest.
- Get votes for your submitted video. Ask others to vote for you. The most votes wins!
- Be creative in your shred. The more creative you are in shredding your card, the more likely you are to be chosen as a winner!
Here’s the video talking about the contest, good luck!
Contest Sponsors
Thanks to our contest sponsors, two of my favorite financial companies, Perkstreet Financial and Lending Club. I’ve written positive reviews of both previously here and here because I really think they’re great companies. In case you’re not familiar with them, here are some quick bios.
PerkStreet Financial
Perkstreet Financial offers one of the only rewards checking accounts available today. Earn 2% cash back on all non-PIN purchases with the PerkStreet Financial(SM) Visa(R) Debit Card. This amounts to over $600 every year for the average American family. PerkStreet isn’t just another bank account; it’s a way to improve your financial life. Take your cash back and save for your future, pay down your debt faster, give back to others, or just have some fun. The PerkStreet checking account is fully FDIC insured and there’s no annual fee or cap on 2% earning.
Lending Club
Lending Club is the leading platform for investing in and obtaining personal loans. Using the power of the Internet to remove the cost and complexities that exist in traditional bank lending, Lending Club connects creditworthy borrowers and investors so both benefit financially. Lending Club’s no-hassle, fixed-rate personal loans start at 6.78% – nearly half the average starting APR offered on credit cards.
