@Karyn Our give a gift away policy isn't anything fancy. We live in a third world country so we're contentious about accumulating too much. When he kids get new gift they go through the toy box and find a gift to give away. We usually give it to someone at church. I say its never too soon to start--you just need to show them the balance of money. Meaning, both the good and the bad things associated with it. I’m curious about your “get one toy, give one away”. I have thought about doing that but I usually want to pass the toy down to the next kids in line.

Our kids are teens, and it becomes more difficult. At this age, the world has a greater influence than we do. We're doing what Craig mentions, tying remuneration to doing chores. Not all chores, as there are certain ones they need to do just as members of the household. Setting up an allowance is a great way to teach kids about money. Making them earn it by helping with chores establishes a work ethic and a sense of reward.
