Be careful on using your personal car insurance or credit company insurance to cover your rental car.

Many rental car companies have come up with a sneaky fee – they’ll now charge you a “loss of use” fee if the car you rent becomes damaged. They say that this covers the income that they lose when they can not rent the car as it it being repaired.

Amazingly this “loss of use” fee is covered if you purchase insurance through the rental car company.

Try to rent from rental companies that don’t have such a “loss of use” fee and that way you can more easily use your credit car or auto insurance to cover potential accidents.

An experience I had with getting “extras” at the counter — I’d booked through Priceline, and was given an Alamo car — is that I was charged tax on the *whole* purchase, not just the extra that I bought (full tank of gas). It came as quite a surprise when I read my credit card bill, and I fought the charges, but to no avail.

From now on, no extras for me.

If you plan on renting a car go to the various rental company's sites and sign up as a member. Many times this will give you preferential treatment in some way like shorter lines. You can also check their deals which can be better then what you find in the aggregaters. A couple of years ago we went to Disney World and got a deal through Budget by using my Amex that netted us a mini van for about the same price as a small car for the week! You are definitely correct - a lot of the rental car extras are completely unnecessary, and you can end up spending a lot of money on them! Glad to see you mentioned sidestep.com in your post. I think that is one of the best third-party travel sites out there, because it basically is a collection of most of the rest (Expedia, Hotwire, etc.), all in one place! Renting a car is a good way to renew your expiring airline miles if the car rental company participates in your airline's mileage program. Our rental through hotwire.com ended up being through national – and we were very happy with them as you were. Very nice to be able to just walk out and choose the car we wanted. Next time I’ll have to look into getting those corporate discount codes and see how it compares to hotwire!

Great stuff! I travel a lot in my work as a youth speaker and I would agree with NC about going with National. That Emerald Isle is pure gold...just get in a car and go. This reminds me of the Seinfeld episode when Jerry is renting the car, and the woman asks him if he wants to pay for insurance. And he says “I don’t plan on crashing the car, why would I pay for the insurance.”

No reason to waste more money on a rental car, only need it to get you from point A to B.
