by Peter Anderson · 3 comments · Print Print · Email Email

Beingfrugal.net is hosting a contest this month and giving people a chance to win a $500 Walmart gift card, courtesy of Nickelodeon!  What do you have to do to be considered for the prize?

  1. Write a post about your single best money saving tip.
  2. Mention the contest and Nickelodeon in your post, since they’re donating such a great prize!
  3. Link back to the contest post, so others can find the contest, too.
  4. Sign the Mister Linky with the permalink to your Holiday Money-Saving Tip, so we can all find it.
  5. If you don’t have a blog, and only if you don’t have a blog, leave your money saving tip in the comments section.

That sounds pretty easy right?  And these online blog contests give you a really good chance of winning compared to other contests – so why not enter?

My Best Holiday Money Saving Tip

My best holiday saving tip is pretty simple, but it involves some work.

The tip?

PLAN AHEAD FOR CHRISTMAS SPENDING

We’ve been doing a budget just about every month this year, and it has saved us a ton of money in so many ways.  Previously we would just spend whatever we felt was right.   Since we made a plan and set limits on spending categories, now we know how much we should be spending, and we stick to it.

Having a budget has forced us to be a little bit more creative with our finances, and how we spend the  money we have.  It also means we have to look ahead and  plan for those big yearly expenses like car insurance, property taxes and Christmas spending.  We set aside a set amount of money for Christmas spending (several hundred), and then save for it throughout the year.  We’ll start saving for next year on January 1st!

Being on a budget and having a plan doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to give nice things for your friends and family, it just means that you’ll be limiting yourself to some small degree, and planning ahead so you can pay cash for your purchases.  Christmas is oh so much sweeter when you don’t have to put it on a credit card and pay for it the rest of the year!

My tip?  Plan ahead, save up, and pay cash!

“Single” best holiday money saving tip? I have a lot of cousins, nieces and nephews. I can not afford to buy them all gifts at Christmas. So I make sure I honor their birthdays. That way my gift giving is spread out throughout the year and I don’t feel the pressure of getting everyone a gift at Christmas. (Yes I”m leaving my comment here because I don’t have a blog.)
