Congratulations on your vehicles. My strategy is to buy a car new and keep it for 10 to 12 years. My last car was a Jeep Cherokee that I drove for 12 years, while my average co-worker bought 3 new cars throwing thousands of dollars away. I now drive a new Scion xD that I plan to keep for at least 10 years, and 90% of the loan payment is being financed with the gas savings I get vs. the Jeep. I'm sure I'll be loving my car 10 years from now, especially when I look at my bank account after it's paid off.

Great guest post. I love the idea of buying the cheap car and saving up the money that would have been spent!

My only quibble is re. the $2,000 outlay. When we moved to Arizona in 2005, that was our car shopping budget - and we had a really hard time finding something that was driveable. The cars wear out so quickly where you are! We ended up with a 10-year-old Mercury Sable - arrgh, that car was a lemon. Would have been better off spending $4,000 and buying something a little more reliable.

Excellent review on why used cars make good sense. Although the hybrid is a great idea, the price and wait time is unrealistic at present.

Buying used cars is the way to go right now and even though you show your brand name cars as examples, it does open ones eyes as to what is possible with sound planning.

Good stuff,

Good post. I understand and agree 100% with your analysis. But using the E320 and Boxster as examples is a little off target. You have to concede that even buying used, you were paying a premium for the brand and image these vehicles project. A Land Cruiser would have been a nice compromise and with better reliability.
